Depression

A recent study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that the frequency of clinical depression increased by 15% from August 2020 to December 2020 which correlates to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, mental health services and resources have become critical to maintaining one’s internal stability.

Clinical depression is caused by a variety of factors such as biological, psychological, and social instances of distress leading to altered behavior due to a chemical imbalance in the brain which is commonly recognized as a ‘depressed’ mood. While it is normal to be in a decline after a significant event or struggle, this is a pattern of behavior that is persistent, seemingly without a trigger, that often lingers for weeks or months. It can impair day-to-day activities such as affecting sleep patterns, hunger, general energy, and self-esteem and can cause suicidal ideation.

A person with depression may find themselves in social isolation due to moodiness and other anxiety-related symptoms, but as with any medical condition treatment is necessary. Treatment for depression includes medication and therapy. This treatment combination stabilizes the chemical imbalance and modifies the behavior outlook to distance oneself from the negative thoughts.
