What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder which causes repeated pauses in breathing while one is asleep. The pauses in breathing can prevent the body from getting enough oxygen.
There are 2 types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the upper airway is blocked reducing or completely stopping the airflow. This is the most common type of sleep apnea and is commonly seen in patients with obesity or enlarged tonsils.
Central sleep apnea happens when the brain does not send enough signals needed for the body to breathe.
Undiagnosed sleep apnea can not only cause weight gain due to hormonal imbalance but places one at a higher risk for insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, and liver abnormalities.
A sleep study is required for a diagnosis of sleep apnea. It is treated with devices such as a continuous positive air pressure machine (CPAP). Your physician will also recommend lifestyle changes leading to weight loss if your sleep apnea is due to hormonal changes or obesity. You may also be recommended for surgical treatment if conservative treatments are not effective.
